The Kings County District Attorney’s Multi Disciplinary Interview Center (MDIC) was established in 1999 after recognizing the need to change the manor in which children who had been victims or witnesses of crimes were being handled.  More specifically it was the desire of the District Attorney’s Office to closely partner with the various professional organization such as Social Services and Victim Witness, who shared a vested interest in these children’s cases and work collaboratively in their benefit.  Working from the onset would allow these professionals to gather at one location at the same time to observe a single forensic interview, thus eliminating the need for multiple interview and the potential of creating any further trauma to the child. This multi-agency approach allows each agency to obtain the necessary information from the victim in order to properly assess the case and provide critical services to ensure the needs of the child and their family are properly addressed.

Our MDIC center is located within the District Attorney’s Office and was constructed with a specific focus on creating a child focused environment that is comfortable, private and psychologically safe for our diverse population of children and their family members.  The materials and furnishings were selected to accommodate children of many ages and developmental stages.  Specific artwork and paint was selected in an attempt to create a comfortable and non threatening environment.

Currently assigned to the MDIC is one full time Investigator, one Investigative Assistant, two Prosecutors, six forensic interviewers and two Trauma Service K9’s, Diamond and Echo.  All members of the Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) have obtained highly specialized training and are extremely experienced in their respective field.  The MDT further extends to include members from Kings County Victim Witness, Kings County Social Services and representatives from local partner law enforcement agencies who all work in collaboration.
