Pesticide Use Around Schools
The California department of Pesticide regulation has adopted the official regulations regarding the use of agricultural pesticides near schools and licensed child day-care facilities. The regulations will take effect on January 1, 2018. The new rule prohibits most applications within a quarter mile around schools and day care facilities from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Additionally, the regulations require growers within the quarter mile radius to provide an annual notification no later than April 30 of pesticides they expect to be used between July 1 of the current year through June 30 of the next year to the schools. Pesticides that require use but are included on the annual notification must provided notification at least 48 hours prior to their use. Fumigants may not be applied within 36 hours of the school and/or daycare facility opening.

Restrictions on Paraquat
There are recent changes regarding the label and use of pesticide product, Paraquat.- Label changes emphasizing paraquat toxicity and supplement warning material.
- Target training materials for paraquat users.
- Closed- system packaging for all non-bulk (less than 120 gallons) end use product containers of paraquat.
- Restricting the use of all paraquat products to certified applicators only (prohibiting use by uncertified persons working under the supervision of a certified applicator).

Reducing Smog-Producing Emissions of Volatile Organic Compound (VOC's)
Effective November 1, 2013, regulations by the DPR are to reduce the smog-producing emissions of VOC's from pesticides. It is designed to keep VOC emissions below a specified goal from May to October each year. High VOC products also have restrictions on sales and use. Required to obtain a recommendation from a PCA in order to purchase high VOC pesticide products. Use restrictions apply to the following pesticide applications: use of high VOC's (abamectin, chlorpyrifos, gibberellins, or oxyfluorfen), applied in San Joaquin Valley between May 1 and October 31, and application to alfalfa, almonds, citrus, cotton, grapes, pistachios, or walnuts.
