Home MenuHow to Vote for President (Presidential Primary Only)
In a Presidential Primary Election, if you are registered to vote with a political party, you will receive a ballot that contains Presidential candidates for your party only.
If you are not registered with a political party, or are registered with a political party who has not yet be qualified by the Secretary of State's office, you will be known as a "No Party Preference" voter. You will receive a nonpartisan ballot, which will not include Presidential candidates. Some political parties will allow you to crossover and vote for their candidates.
You can check your current registration status here.
The deadline to register to vote or update your voter registration online is 15 days before Election Day (February 20, 2024). After that, you can visit the Elections Office or any Vote Center to complete a "Voter Information Update" form or register and vote conditionally.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Who can crossover?
Only voters who are flagged as "No Party Preference" voters can crossover in this election.
Who sets the rules as to who is allowed to crossover?
The parties themselves decide if they will allow crossover voting to occur. They then inform the Secretary of State of their decision.
If I do a crossover vote, will that change my party preference?
No. If you wish to change your party preference, you must re-register.
Will I need to request a crossover ballot for the November Election?
No. Crossover ballots only apply to the Presidential Primary Election.
What if I'm registered with a political party, but I want to vote for another political party's Presidential candidate?
You must re-register with that political party.
If I write in the candidate of my choice on the "write-in" line, will my vote count for that candidate?
No. Only a qualified Write-In Candidate will be counted for a write in. On a "No Party Preference" ballot, the contest of President is completely absent.
My Presidential Candidate of choice is missing / I have no Presidential Candidates on my ballot. What do I do?
Please contact the Elections Department for assistance.
Why did you send me a ballot with no president / wrong party candidates?
Changes to your registration 60 days before an election may not be reflected on your mail ballot. This is to allow ample time for our print vendor to get ballots to our voters by the legally mandated date (29 days before Election Day). Please contact our office for any questions about your ballot.
